Particularly in large enterprise networks and in service provider environments, there is a middle layer between the core and edge (or sometimes referred to as ‘access’), which is called the aggregation layer.

In the aggregation layer, aggregation switches play the important role of aggregating traffic from a large number of edge switches to be forwarded to the core switches as well as receiving traffic from core to distribute towards edge switches. The aggregation switches need to process packets between core and edge switches, and must be secure, reliable and have simplified management.
