At the risk of jeopardizing my reputation, I admit to really like a flip phone. Go ahead chuckle. I like how a flip phone feels in my hand and follows the contour of my face when holding the phone to my head. I like it is small and easily fits in my pocket. I have had many flip phone models from the Motorola RAZR (the best mobile phone ever made) to the Samsung Rugby that is IP67 and MIL-STD-810G certified. With the Rugby, I don’t worry about the phone getting wet, dropped, or dirty causing it to no longer work. I have tried to hang onto my favorite models by purchasing refurbished units from online auction sites, but they never last as long. For a while, I carried a smart phone during the work week and switched to my rugged flip on the weekends. As much as I like the old flip phone, the truth is it no longer meets all my needs for a mobile device. The way people use mobile devices is just so different today. Fewer people want to talk on the phone or leave a voice message, but prefer text or some other messaging app. When I don’t have my smartphone, I soon wish to use one of the applications on that phone.

Just as people prefer to communicate differently on their mobile device, businesses communicate differently with colleagues, customers, and partners. An existing phone system may work perfectly well for voice calls and voicemail, but  does it allow you to communicate in the way your employees and customers prefer? Are you able to take advantage of new technologies, including the latest touchscreen desk phones, mobility, user presence, instant messaging,  or web collaboration? As new communication tools evolve, it is important to keep your system up to date for continued support and take advantage of the latest available hardware and software features and functions. The days of installing a phone system and not thinking much about it for 15-20 years are behind us.

On the latest episode of the Hiscall Technology Podcast, we discuss migrating legacy ShoreTel 14.2 and earlier systems to the latest Mitel MiVoice Connect software. We cover some of the new phones, voice appliances, soft clients, and teaming applications for improved communications. Updating the legacy systems also helps keep serviceability up to date with the latest hardware so you don’t end up looking for parts at online shopping channels.
